Last night I watched (okay, rewatched) the season 9 premiere of South Park, the episode entitled "Mr. Garrison's Fancy New Vagina." The gist of the episode is that Mr. Garrison gets a sex change, and is excited to have missed his period, not because he wants to have a baby, but because he really wants to have an abortion.
While watching this episode, I could not help but laugh quietly, as perhaps the only person who loves abortion more than Mrs. Garrison is Carrie Lynch.
Carrie, if you think "reproductive choice" is a burning issue for the 98% of the voters that fall between the extremists on both sides of this issue, I have a bridge I would like to sell you. The odds of abortion deciding the Plale race are about as good as the odds of me saying nice things about any of John Gard's former staff (what was ever done with Bryon Wornson's stack of thousands of unreturned phone messages, anyway? Are they hiding in a drawer somewhere with Rudy Silbaugh's unanswered constituent mail?).

Let's be realistic though. Despite any claims to the contrary, isn't the main reason Riley is challenging Plale based almost solely on the abortion issue? Aren't their positions almost identical on almost everything else?
I woudn't return your calls either, A-hole.
Haha. Another sophisticated, nuanced argument from leadership, perhaps? Save it for those awful weekly GOPress emails, okay?
Great, now I won't be able to watch South Park without thinking of this post. Love that show and this post made me laugh out loud.
South Park aside, reproductive rights are indeed very important to me and I do think it will play a role in the Plale seat. Don't think I said 98% though.
This post says to me that you are definitely a male. Only a man could dismiss this issue as an "extremist" issue or not understand why I write about it so much since a man will never have to face a life and death decision about this issue.
Thanks for your reply. The people I respect most in the abortion debate are the ones who are consistent. After all, a month-old fetus, whether conceived by a married couple, an unmarried couple, or through rape or incest, is still a month-old fetus. The circumstances of its conception have no bearing on what "it" actually is.
I have more respect for people who say "abortion should be legal in all circumstances" or "abortion should be illegal in all cirumstances" than I do for moderate Republicans who are constantly trying to split hairs by saying "well, we'll say it's okay in some cases but not in others and maybe that won't offend voters." I should have done a better job of making that clear in my post.
I don't think this issue is going to swing the Plale race one way or the other. I think most Americans basically acknowledge that we're at a colossal impasse on abortion and don't spend much time thinking about it actively.
As for me, I say let the woman and her doctor make the decision. Why? Well, I've met enough politicians to know that I trust a woman and her doctor a lot more.
Thanks again for your comment.

Ok, I take back my sassy comment about you dismissing this issue. (And not just because you say it should be up to the woman)
You have outlined here one of the very few consistent answers on this topic that I have seen in a long time.
But I stand by my belief that reproductive choice is becoming more of an issue because Republicans have started inserting into daily life now. It's not just about abortion. Plale and others think birth control should be treated like narcotic or something and that is starting to wake up more people to what is really going on in this country on this issue.
