Could this turn into a Christmas gift for some lucky Republican legislator?

Not that this comes as a surprise to anyone, but today Governor Doyle officially acknowledged the resignation of Insurance Commissioner Jorge Gomez. Gomez's pending departure was widely known, as Doyle prepares to make changes in his cabinet for his second term as governor.

What is more interesting is that the name of one Republican legislator has been strongly mentioned as a possible replacement for Gomez. This could be the first opportunity for Doyle to make some trouble. We should know in the next few weeks whether he is able to use this well-paid vacancy to leverage a potential political advantage in one of Wisconsin's swing districts.

It might be interesting, except the strongly mentioned republican is the same person who is doing the strong mentioning and does this stong mentioning whenever there is a vacancy in the position.

Why, surely you are the first person to ever accuse the strongly mentioned Republican of being a ceaseless self-promoter!

This time there's actually some logic behind letting him have it though. Even if he's been openly coveting it for a decade, maybe more.

SO WHO IS THIS PUB???

AT LEAST A HINT!

He's the strongly mentioned Republican mentioned in previous comments.

No logic to it at all. Doyle's better off looking in the other house if he wants to effect some change.

Except for the fact that the Dems can pick that seat up. Thoughts for someone in the Assembly who might be in a similar position?

I agree that poaching an Assembly member gets you more bang for your buck. Arguably though, you have to find someone who is in a swing district and who is at least marginally qualified for the position.

OCI is a pretty worthless department to begin with, so it's not like a Republican over there can screw much up from a Democratic perspective. And if it gave them a solid chance to go to 19-14 in the Senate, well, that's more than Jorge Gomez ever brought to the table.

Hell, the GOP would be scrambling just to find a candidate in this seat after the clock cleaning they took down there this fall.

There would seem to be an Assembly member who is in a swing district in the Appleton area (he only won his race by about 6 points) and has sat on the Insurance Committee for the last 10 years, including vice chair for the last 4. Plus in that district, Democrats would have a ready-made candidate right off the bat. In fact, I had assumed you were talking about Wieckert all along.

That could certainly be a possibility, but that district still leans GOP.

I think some of us have been referring to a former Senate Chairman of the Insurance Committee who saw two of the three Assembly seats in his district go Dem, and who didn't win by a huge margin himself.
