Thoughts on the Palin speech

On the whole, I thought it was good. The hits on Obama were delivered pretty well though you could tell they weren't necessarily written in her voice. The biographical stuff was better. She has a cute family and an appealing backstory. She does have a "real person" sort of appeal that the other three guys don't have.

The speech did hit a dead spot about two-thirds of the way through but she brought it home okay. The crowd really needed to shut the hell up in a lot of spots. They were breaking up the flow of the speech with their constant vocalizing. And "drill baby drill?" Let's leave that chant at home. That stuff just comes off on television as crazy and reinforces what Peggy Noonan said in the WSJ - that the Republican base doesn't always get it's not where the American people are.

I enjoyed Palin's speech more than Obama's speech, but that's probably because I've heard the boilerplate Obama speech so many times I could give it myself. This was at least something different. I have little doubt that McCain's speech will not be as effective nor as newsworthy as was Palin's speech. It was more interesting than anything Joe Biden will say.

Everyone but Olbermann and Rachel Maddow seems to have found it passable, and watching those two is like watching the dog chase its lesbian tail that only wags to the left, so whatever. I'm surprised Maddow hasn't accused Palin of having the fifth kid as a political prop yet.

It was a home run, but between the media chatter and it being her first speech, it was like a home run in a little league stadium. She hit the ball plenty far - how far it carries in the big leagues, we'll see in the coming weeks.

Well written entry. I thought at points she went over the top but she did back off at the right time. I am sure now that the Obama campaign will take her very seriously.

She did quite well, when lots of people were watching for the same reason they watch a car race. No fiery bloody crash, so she won.

Hey there FR... about time you recognize a solid hit by a conservative.

She got a really good first down and that's important. There really isn't any more she could have done. But like a first down, the main thing she gained is the chance to keep the ball, for the time being; while there are a lot more plays before the game is over.

She read the teleprompter well to an enthusiastic Republican crowd. WOW, she IS a winner. Now I totally understand why GOPpers are annoyed by the Obama messiah effect.

Let's see how she does in the debate with Biden. I'll bet my left leg she recites the talking points and gets demolished. That seems to be all we can expect from McCain's camp (cue Tucker...).

The single greatest mistake the Left has and will continue to make regarding Gov. Palin is to underestimate her. So keep it up lefties, Sarah Palin is going to eat your lunch.

Hey anon comment about she did a good job reading the telepromter...

The telepromoter actually stopped working half way through her speech. she had to wing it!

As a Democrat who underestimated the GOP ticket in 1988 because of Dan Quayle, I'm not going to underestimate her. (Can't believe I thought that Dukakis and Bentsen were good.) Gov. Palin delivered a great speech, especially when you consider her mission (rallying the conservative base). However, I wonder what Quayle would say about Bristol if Gov. Palin was a Democrat. Unlike Murphy Brown, Bristol is not fictional.

Lesbian tail? What's up with that? Why deride her sexual orientation? You don't usually go that route. I'm disappointed.

Teleprompter stopped working? Says who? How does any one know that is true and not just more GOP PR bullshit? The only people who can "verify" are with the campaign or from a conservative gossip site, which itself stated:

"...by the end of the speech the problem had been resolved. But you can clearly see during the middle Palin looked at her text often."

She still had notes. I've been to numerous BO events in many different venues and most of the time he doesn't use notes or a teleprompter. Besides, is your point that any forensics champ is qualified to be ready to take over the button? Lets not compare our nominee to your #2--how does McCain do? He slobbers and limps through his damn stump speech.

I continue to be amazed about how Palin is viewed as some star whose finally gotten her due. Most GOPpers, even on the inside never saw her coming, never heard of her and never considered her for VP. McCain makes a snap judgment and suddenly she is all you ever wanted. I gotta repeat that if I were a rank and file Republican, I'd be insulted that so many truly qualified people weren't even considered and then a completely unvetted nobody with a host of issues that can sink a campaign (and further hurt an already deflated party) was just grabbed.

Mark my words, if Obama wins, Palin as VP will be one of the main excuses put forth why McCain lost and she will become a pariah in your party.

Gee, RS when did you become Mr. super Republican. You defend the undefendable choice-Palin, defend all the bull statements that the McCain campaign is throwing out there repeatedly. You rip apart Mike Huebsch, Jeff Fitzgerald and last but, not least John Gard as poor leaders and ass clowns. When right in front of us, you don't call out an old man for making desperate decisions while selling his soul to the devil. I guess that you would love this pig, even if Gard was the VP. I think that RS has become BS.

Examples please, especially in terms of defending Palin. I've mostly spoken in terms of other people's attitudes toward her. I said I thought she did a good job with the speech, but mostly in consideration with what the expectations were. Hell, I referred to it as a "home run in a little league stadium." You don't think that's a backhanded compliment?

I certainly think Sarah Palin is a defensible choice given how few options McCain had. I'll ask you as I've asked others. If the calculation by the McCain campaign is that he needed to nominate a conservative, who do you think would have been a better choice either politically or in terms of governance? You have to pick a conservative. And please, explain your rationale.

Since you like mocking things when are you going to call out your guy McCain -the new agent of "Change" and his 169 lobbyist/policy advisors that he has on the payroll? Do you really think that all those Bush/Rove surrogates and the K Streeters on his campaign are going to "change Washington"? Apparently 8 years of C students running the country into the ground isn't enough.

Well, sadly Obama has hundreds of those old white guys from Washington whispering in his ear too. You're right, it'd be great if both sides would do away with them. As long as they're around, either side is going to have a hard time delivering the change that they promise.
