I love a judge with a good sense of humor.
In a surprise move Tuesday, a federal three-judge panel told Republican legislative leaders they should consider drawing new election maps taking into account challenges from Democrats and Latinos.
The court gave the Legislature until 5:30 p.m. Tuesday to decide whether it wants to revisit the maps it approved last summer. If it does not, the trial challenging the maps will resume Wednesday. If lawmakers agree to take up the maps anew, the court would give them until mid-March to approve them.
The order, coming just after the trial began Tuesday, sent the 16 attorneys in the courtroom scrambling to consult with their clients and make overtures to lawmakers and GOP Gov. Scott Walker.
Given how badly these maps are drawn, complete with all kinds of technical issues from hastily using census block data, a do-over probably wouldn't be a bad idea if only to clean things up around the edges.
That, however, puts the matter squarely in the hands of Dale Schultz (R - Editorial Boards), or any other GOP senator that doesn't like what they're getting.

And not surprisingly, the Brothers Fitz say "no deal."
I do think things will get cleaned up, but it will be on Stadtmueller and Dow's terms now.
Once again the five Aces caucus has found out that no matter how bad the end legislative product is, no matter how much total corruption is involved, nothing was done wrong and yet another crazy twist of some obscure law. I fully expect that the Republicans will declare that the elections in 2010 were for lifetime appointments because elections have consequences.
There's a lot to be said for clean lines. Ask a clerk.
"We can't do it again because we already did it" is a novel defense, though.
