The carpetbagger question is one that had to have been anticipated and rehearsed. So it doesn't seem plausible that his response was not planned.
I think what he was shooting for was something similar to the Newt vs John King exchange in South Carolina. I think that was the target. But the result was less than desired because of the arrogant prick thing.

It is interesting that he refers to his opponents as "competitors." It is an alarming revelation of his mindset.
